Hi Folks,

I am looking at setting up ClearOS on my new home network. I want to provide a comprehensive content filter and directory service for my home computers and users.

I would like to be able to setup multiple levels of content filtering (essentially "child" and "none") and have it automatically apply the appropriate level based on the user logged into the computer. Is something like this possible today?

Alternatively I see that in the roadmap there is a "content filter bypass for end users" slated for ClearOS 6 Future. That might be a workable solution as well, but I'm not sure what the timeline is for incorporation in the OS. I'd like to deploy ASAP to protect my daughter from the darker places on the internet.

Input / suggestions on how I can use ClearOS to achieve multi-level, user-based content filtering would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Scott

Your first question is NTLM authentication...and not supported without hackin the webconfig (theres a thread on this)

My patch will not work on 6.x ..yet. If I get time i'll look at it :)
If your OK with PHP you can change the user to another local system users, but it does not authenticate against LDAP.

Tim, do you know if your patch will work on ClearOS 6.x?

Does it have to be admin users or is there a way to add regular users to the exception list (i.e. can put in their password at bypass page)?

    Thanks Tim!

Do you know if there is a way to have the user authenticate against LDAP and have their credentials automatically passed to the web proxy so that the user group for web browsing is identified when the user logs into the computer?

You can use the web proxy with content filtering, with authentication turned on. Every time you open a browser window you will need to login. You can then define which users are in which filter group.

Alternatively consider using the proxy bypass page I made so that Admin users (or someone with a password) can bypass the page blocks. This works in transparent mode so the filtering happens to all users, and then specific users can override when they need too...
