There were a number of issues with past builds using SFF Apollo Lake CPUs with various workaround suggested but no clear path forward was ever published on this forum and no real success stories (that I could find)... typically the suggestion was to try different hardware (I think because Clearos was using older kernels that didn't support Apollo Lake)
My question is... are we past that point now with ClearOS 7.7? Are installs to Apollo Lake based embedded boards likely to be more or less successful compared to past ClearOS v7 builds?
Apologies this stretches my knowledge. For context, I'm still using my under-powered 8yo intel atom D2500CC with ClearOS 6.5 which is not compatible with ClearOSv7. For for the last 5 years I have not found a suitable upgrade path into ClearOS v7 that provides a low power fanless option in the 10-15W power use range. The suggestion of a HP Microserver is too power hungry/noisy than I want. I've looked at intel NUC and various SFF but I'm also want to house 2 x storage drives and most of the SFF computers I have found have room for a single drive only.... or many have Apollo Lake CPU's... which appeared (to me) to be a deal breaker in the past. I'm hoping to find a mITX fanless board < 15W power with dual LAN.

What is exactly incompatible with your D2500CC using Centos 7.X?
It has a D2500 CPU - that should not be the problem. A backup firewall here has a D2700 CPU which is the same as the D2500, just a bit faster, 2.13 rather than 1.86 GHz. Works fine with ClearOS 7.7 here. D2700 Firewall. Currently turned off.
Main firewalls here sport a Gigabyte J1900M-D2P with Intel J1900 CPUs and run ClearOS 7.X no problems. These are nice boards as they have two slots, a PCI and a PCIe. They fit in an ITX case that has provision for two slots and a slightly wider than ITX board. E.g. Cooler Master Elite 110. J1900 Firewall -

Why are you saying a HP microserver is noisy and consumes too much ?
I’m running on a HP Gen8 Microserver with a E3-1220v2 processor and with several SATA drives in it. The server is very quit and the fan is most of the time 7-10% so also not making any noise. Running a lot of applications on it and consuming around 20-25w
So if you will use SSD instead of SATA this will save a few watts
Dual LAN and an ILo port, so perfect as a remote server -

My Gen10 (a development model) is noisy enough not to want it in my study but I like to run very quiet PC's. My current PC has a CPU fan but is otherwise fanless. I believe the production G10's were quieter. The latest Gen10 uses an external power brick. I don't know if it makes it any quieter. -

Its been a long time but if I recall the screen would go blank during install... there were a number of threads that you were active in Tony as you had the same CPUs in your servers at the time and I believed (perhaps incorrectly) that it had something to do with poor 64bit support... so v 6.10 that its currently running was the last 32bit ClearOS.

I have not tried installing v7.7 on the assumption that it would not work...since 7.2/7.4 did not.

Sorry - I don't have an Apollo Lake, so cannot assist with information from experience. Have no idea if 7.7 will help, or if ClearOS will update to the newly released CentOS 7.8 and provide better support. Full support for Apollo Lake requires kernel 4.13 or later. Not sure if Apollo Lake support will be back-ported. You could check the release notes for Redhat and CentOS 7.X versions. I don't recall having any problems with black screens with D2700. However, there are several ways around it.
The two Gigabyte J1900M-D2P boards here are fanless. On this ITX Fanless system the board shown is very similar to mine, except mine has two slots for expansion cards and standard desktop memory. J1900M-D2P

Many thanks for the replies - and thanks for digging up that Apollo Lake thread Tony - I had read that before when I was looking at the j3455n-d3h but thought it was on this forum and was wondering why I could not find . duh.
Ive seen some SFF computers going cheap with the J1900 .(e.g. Acer XC603)..the 10W TDP meets my self imposed specs. I see the GA-J1900N-D3V is dual LAN too... if I can find one. Going the ElRepo Kernel route is probably biting off more than I can chew but I gather your post Tony means the 4.4.221 Kernel should be compatible with 7.7. and should have full Apollo Lake support to widen the hardware options.
I'm standing at the precipitous edge of my knowledge. thanks for some options. -

Yes, probably will be harder to find. However, there are two on eBay currently e.g. here - if this link doesn't work just do an eBay search on GA-J1900N-D3V.
I got my two boards direct from China (minimal shipping from there to here in Australia) - but that is some time ago now. Installed an Intel 82575EB based dual NIC PCIe card in each which uses the igb driver and MultiWan. (I have both cable and ADSL). Good luck with whatever you choose to do... -
