The partitions were visible at that level and after formatting the drive from the command line I can mount the partition.

BMB still doesn't see it, I am now almost certain that is because it is not being seen as a USB removable device.

That said I have it mounted and am going to rSync the important stuff to it.

Not ideal but the best I can do at this moment in time.

Can you see sde1 and sde2 from the "blkid" command? can you manually mount the drives?

The lack of ext4 on the wee drive is OK, the GUI says it needs to be initialised so that's all OK

I wish that this server were as close as an attic, I wouldn't mind the stairs, unfortunately I am in Belfast and it's in Paris.

The only thing I can see from the dmesg output is that the Seagate external seems to be appearing as a SCSI drive and not USB. Which is weird as it was working OK earlier in the year. I wonder if there has been a change somewhere in the underlying system that is seeing this disk differently.

I think in the short term I am going to get the Paris office to use a large USB stick so that backups can happen.

I don't know the hotplug system now that it auto-mounts. Presumably that is a ClearOS 7 feature? My server is in the attic and I can't run up and down to test.

From the output of dmesg it looks like your flash drive is sdb, but your big drive (2TB Seagate) is being given the designation sde? It can't find an ext4 file sysyem on the flash drive, but can it find anything? sde is not doing anything.

Unfortunately I don't know what to expect. Are you able to boot from a live CD of any distro and see if it can read the disk?

So there is nothing in fstab to mount any USB device. It must be controlled by udev. When you hotplug the device, does anything show up at or near the end of the command "dmesg", referring to the device? Unfortunately I don't have any hardware I can play around with.

USB drives are auto mounted and visible in the GUI, well they're supposed to, just not this one.
It was working just fine for some time.

I have tested with a small USB pen drive and that shows up.

The drive in question is sdb.

I don't know how BMB works, but normally you'd have to mount your USB Drive somewhere. Which disk is it that your are referring to? sdb or sr0? Where would you expect to see it mounted? I don't think ClearOS supports auto-mounting of disks when they are hot-plugged. What is the contents of /etc/fstab?
