Hi Ya'll im trying to use clearos as a form as Nas that can be accessed locally or over the web. I previously used rockstor but that has been proven too slow for me to use locally and impossible to use over the web.

Hi,
To be honest I think there are beter NAS solutions out there (pure filesharing), but if you look for software for a home server which can fulfil tasks like gateway, webserver, mailserver, file sharing server etc then ClearOS is really a nice solution.
For file sharing you could also use the owncloud app from the marketplace.
There are also 2 media servers available Plex and Servio.
I encourage you just to try ClearOS and see if it fit your needs. -

ClearOS will allow ftp access from the internet into flexshares, if you want. FTP is tricky and best run on the gateway and ClearOS can fulfil that role. It is not normal to open Samba shares (including flexshares) directly to the internet and ClearOS's configuration of Samba used to expressly block it by only binding to LAN interfaces. I can't remember f it is still configured the same way. FTP is the more conventional route.
If it is just for you while roaming, you can connect by VPN and access the Samba shares as if you are on you LAN, but you *may* need to access the shares by IP address rather than NetBIOS name - OpenVPN can be tricky here.
